Deleting a page isn’t redacting it
Worth being clear about, because the two get confused and the confusion leaks confidential information regularly. Removing a page removes everything on it. Drawing a black box over a name in a PDF editor doesn’t: the text stays in the file under the rectangle, selectable and copyable by anyone who tries.
If a document contains something that must not be readable, removing the whole page is safe. Covering part of a page isn’t, unless the tool you used genuinely rewrote the content stream.
The usual reasons
Cover sheets and fax headers on documents that were faxed some time in the last century. Blank backs of double-sided sheets picked up by a scanner. The terms and conditions pages nobody needs in the copy they’re filing. Duplicate pages from a feeder that pulled two sheets at once.
In each case the thumbnails are the fastest way to spot them, because a blank page and a scanned blank page look identical in a page count and obviously different in a grid.
Common questions
Is the removed content really gone from the file?
Yes. The output is a new document built from the pages you kept, so the removed pages aren’t present at all, rather than hidden or marked as deleted. This is different from deleting a page in some editors, which can leave the object in the file until it is saved in a way that rewrites it.
Does this remove text I selected on a page?
No, this works on whole pages only. Removing a sentence from a page or hiding a name behind a black box, is redaction and it is a different and much more dangerous job: a black rectangle drawn over text leaves the text underneath perfectly selectable.
Can I delete several pages at once?
Click each page you want gone and it is marked, then save. There is no limit and the counter above the grid tells you how many are marked and how many will be kept before you commit to anything.
Why is the file not much smaller afterwards?
Because size follows content rather than page count. Removing three pages of plain text from a document whose weight is one scanned photograph changes almost nothing. If the goal is a smaller file, look at what is actually heavy first.
Can I get the pages back?
Not from the output, which genuinely no longer contains them. Your original file is untouched, so keep it until you’re sure. Nothing here modifies the file you dropped in.
