How to rearrange pages in a PDF

Move pages into the right order, fix a double-sided scan that came out shuffled and save the PDF without re-rendering a single page.

A page in the wrong place is one of the most common PDF annoyances: an appendix that landed in the middle, a signature page that ended up first, or a scan that came out in an order nobody intended. Fixing it shouldn’t mean printing the document and scanning it again.

Moving pages

Open the file in Reorder PDF pages. Every page appears as a thumbnail with buttons to move it earlier or later. Work from the front: get page 1 right, then page 2 and so on, and the rest falls into place. When the order looks right, choose Save in this order and download the result.

The pages are moved, not redrawn. Text stays selectable, links keep working and images keep their quality, because each page is copied into the new file exactly as it was.

The double-sided scan problem

Scan a double-sided letter on a scanner that only does one side and you feed the stack twice: once for the fronts, then flipped for the backs. The result is every front followed by every back. Because the stack was flipped, the backs usually come out in reverse order too.

For a three-sheet document, that means the scan contains:

Position Page
1, 2, 3 Fronts of sheets 1, 2 and 3
4, 5, 6 Backs of sheets 3, 2 and 1

The fix is to pair them back up: front 1, back 1 (the last page), front 2, back 2 (the second-last page) and so on. On a long document, it is easiest to move the backs one at a time, starting with the very last page. Blank backs are worth removing while you are there; how to delete a page from a PDF covers that.

Sideways pages

Scans often mix portrait and landscape pages. Rotate PDF turns individual pages and saves the rotation into the file, so the pages open the right way in every reader. How to rotate a PDF permanently explains why rotating in a viewer usually doesn’t stick.

Pages from more than one file

Reordering works within a single PDF. If the pages you need are spread across several files, merge them first, then put the combined document in order. How to combine PDF files walks through it.

Order first, numbers last

If the document needs page numbers, add them after the order is settled. Numbers stamped before reordering travel with their pages and end up out of sequence. How to add page numbers to a PDF covers placement and starting numbers.

Common questions

Does reordering pages reduce quality?

No. The pages are moved within the document’s structure, not redrawn, so text stays selectable and images keep their original quality.

How do I fix a double-sided document scanned on a one-sided scanner?

You end up with all the fronts, then all the backs, often in reverse. Move each back to sit after its front: page 1, then the last back, then page 2, then the second-last back, and so on.

Will the page numbers printed on the pages update?

No. Numbers that are part of the page content move with the page. If the document needs numbering, add it after the order is final.

Can I reorder pages from two different PDFs?

Merge them into one file first, then reorder. Merging keeps each page exactly as it was.
