Why a PDF rather than a folder of photos
Because one file arrives intact. Photos attached to an email arrive in whatever order the client feels like, get reordered by whoever saves them and lose their sequence entirely once they’re in someone's downloads folder. A PDF keeps them in order, opens the same way on every device and is what most submission systems actually accept.
Getting readable scans out of a phone camera
Most of the photos that end up in a PDF are documents photographed on a desk and three things decide whether they’re readable: even light with no shadow from your own hand, the camera square to the page rather than at an angle and the whole document in frame with a little margin. Resolution is rarely the problem; geometry and lighting usually are.
If the photos are larger than they need to be, run them through thecompressor first. A document photograph at 1,600 pixels on the long edge is perfectly legible and a fraction of the size of the original.
Page size and margins
A fixed page size scales each image to fit inside the margin and centres it, which is what you want for printing and for anything that’ll be filed alongside other documents. Fitting the page to the image gives a document with no white space and pages of differing shapes, which reads better on a phone and prints oddly.
Common questions
Can it take HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Yes. A PDF can only embed JPEG and PNG directly, so a HEIC is decoded and re-encoded as JPEG first. That happens here rather than being refused, because turning phone photos into one document is the main reason anyone opens this kind of tool.
Should I pick A4 or fit each page to its image?
A4 or Letter if it is going to be printed or submitted somewhere that expects a standard page. Fit each page to its image if it is going to be read on a screen, since that avoids white bands around photos that don’t match the page shape.
Will the text in my scanned documents be searchable?
No. The pages are images, so the words in them are pixels rather than text. Making them searchable needs OCR, which is a separate process and not one this runs. A PDF of scans is a container for pictures unless something has recognised the text.
How do I control the page order?
The list under the drop zone is the order and the arrows move an image up or down. Worth checking, because file pickers commonly return images sorted by name in a way that puts photo10 before photo2.
Why is the PDF so large?
Because it contains your images at their full size. Ten phone photos make a PDF about the size of ten phone photos. If that is too big for an email or an upload form, compress or resize the images first and then build the PDF from the smaller versions.
