The interleaved scan
A document feeder without duplex scanning gives you one pass of the fronts and one pass of the backs and the result is every odd page followed by every even page. It is the single most common reason a PDF is in the wrong order and it is entirely mechanical to fix.
One trick for next time: put the stack back in reversed for the second pass. The backs then come out in descending order, which some scanning software can interleave automatically and which is easier to reason about by hand than an arbitrary shuffle.
Why the thumbnails matter
Reordering by page number alone is how people end up with a document that is wrong in a subtler way than it was before. Seeing the pages means you’re moving a recognisable thing rather than an index and a mistake is obvious rather than discovered by whoever receives it.
Common questions
What does the number on each page mean?
Where that page will be in the finished document. The thumbnails stay in their new positions as you move them, so the number is a running count of the order you’re building rather than the page’s original position.
Can I reorder without a mouse?
Yes. Each page has move buttons that are ordinary focusable buttons, so tabbing to them and pressing Enter works. Drag and drop isn’t the only route, which matters because drag and drop is one of the least accessible interactions on the web.
My double-sided scan is interleaved. Can this fix it?
Yes and it is the most common reason people are here. Scanning all the fronts then all the backs gives you pages in the order 1, 3, 5, 2, 4, 6. Moving the backs into place fixes it and for a long document it is worth scanning the backs in reverse order next time, which makes the interleave predictable.
Does reordering re-render the pages?
No. A new document is built referencing the same pages in a different order, carrying their content and fonts across unchanged. Text stays text and image quality is identical.
Can I reorder and delete in one go?
These are separate tools on purpose, because doing both at once makes it easy to lose track of which page you meant. Reorder here, then remove pages in the page deleter or the other way round. Neither modifies your original.
