How to extract pages from a PDF

Pull out one page, a range or every page as its own file, without a paid PDF editor. How page ranges work and when to delete pages instead.

You need page 7 of a 60-page contract or the three pages of a report that apply to one client or each page of a batch scan as its own file. Printing to PDF with a page range works in some programs, but it can re-render the pages and lose selectable text. Extracting copies them exactly.

Extracting a range

Split PDF takes page ranges such as 2-4, 7, 10-12 and gives you one file per range, downloaded together as a zip. Page numbers here are positions in the file: if the document has a cover and roman-numbered front matter, the page printed as 1 may be the fifth page of the file. The thumbnails show which is which.

To split a batch scan, choose one file per page and every page becomes its own PDF.

Keeping most of it instead

If you want nearly all of a document, it is quicker to remove what you don’t want. Delete PDF pages shows every page; click the ones to drop and download the rest. It is the natural way to remove a blank page, a cover sheet or a duplicate.

Pages as pictures

For a slide, a chat or a web page, you usually want an image rather than a PDF. PDF to JPG renders pages as photos and PDF to PNG keeps text-heavy pages crisp. If what you want is a photograph that sits on a page, not the whole page, extract images takes it out as the original file.

Putting pages together again

A note on privacy

Contracts, statements and medical letters are exactly the documents people split to share only the relevant part. Extracting in your browser means the full document is never uploaded anywhere in order to share a single page of it.
