Built for photos of people
The tool uses a model trained specifically on portraits. It doesn’t just decide which pixels are person and which are background: it estimates how much of each pixel is person. That is what lets strands of hair, the soft edge of a sleeve and the gaps between fingers come out properly, instead of the hard, helmet-shaped outline cheap cut-out tools produce.
It works best with one or a few people clearly in the frame: portraits, selfies, headshots, staff photos and full-length shots. Crowds in the distance and people partly hidden behind objects are harder.
Getting a clean edge
Hair against a busy background is the hardest case for any tool. If a faint halo of the old background remains, especially on plain studio backdrops, tick Crisper edges, which trims the almost-transparent pixels at the cost of the finest strands. For a profile picture that will be shown small, the crisp setting often looks better; for a large print, leave it off.
What happens to your photo
The image is read and decoded in your browser, including iPhone HEIC photos. The model runs on a 512-pixel copy to find the person and the result is scaled back up and applied to the full-resolution original, so the output keeps every pixel of detail from your photo. Changing the background afterwards is instant, because the person only has to be found once. To tidy up the result, crop it orresize it for where it is going.
Common questions
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The cut-out model downloads to your browser and runs there, so your photo never leaves your device. Most background removers send the image to a server to process and some keep it. For photos of yourself, your family or your staff, that difference matters.
Does it work on products, pets or objects?
Not well and deliberately so. The model is trained for people, which lets it be small and fast and very good at hair. On a product shot it may keep part of the background or remove part of the product. A general-purpose model is on the way.
Why does the first photo take longer?
The model is 26MB and downloads the first time you use the tool. It is kept in your browser afterwards, so later photos, even on another day, are processed in a second or two on a typical laptop.
Which background should I choose?
Transparent for putting the person onto a design, slide or another photo, which downloads as a PNG. White or a colour for profile pictures, ID-style photos and team pages, as a JPG. Blurred original gives a portrait-mode look while keeping the real setting.
Is there a watermark or a size limit?
No watermark, no sign-up and no reduced-resolution preview. Photos up to 4,000 pixels on the long side are processed at full size; larger ones are scaled to that first.
