What is Redaction?

Also called redact.

Redaction is permanently removing sensitive information from a document or image before sharing it, not just covering it up.

How it works

Redaction has two parts: hiding the information visually, and making sure it no longer exists in the file. Failing at the second is behind many real-world leaks, from legal filings to government reports, where hidden text was recovered in seconds.

For images, painting over an area with a solid color changes the pixels themselves, so once the file is saved, the original values are gone. PDFs are harder because they separate text from its appearance: a shape drawn on top leaves the text layer intact.

Redaction vs masking

Masking only covers content, as with a sticky note on a page. Redaction removes it. A safe workflow for a PDF is to apply redaction, or to convert affected pages to images after covering them, then check that the text can no longer be selected, searched or found in the file’s metadata.

A practical example

Drawing a black box over an account number in a PDF editor can leave the number in the file, where copying and pasting reveals it. Proper redaction deletes it.

What to watch out for

Blurring and pixelating can sometimes be reversed or guessed, especially for short numbers. Use solid blocks, check the result, and remember metadata can reveal the same details.

Common questions

Is a black box in a PDF enough to redact it?

Often not. Many editors add the box as a separate layer on top of the text, which stays selectable underneath. Use a true redaction feature, or flatten the page to an image after covering it.

Is blurring a safe way to hide text?

Not reliably. Blurred or pixelated text with a small set of possible values, such as card numbers, can sometimes be reconstructed. Solid opaque boxes are safer.

How can I check a redaction worked?

Try to select and copy the text beneath the box, search the document for the hidden word, and check document properties and image metadata for the same details.
